1 minute 30 with the iPad

Apple, Moodle 1 Comment »

We’ve just received the iPad at Moodle. I’ve played one minute with it. My first feelings are:
* Browsing the web is awesome specially with a the big virtual keyboard.
* If on iPhone I didn’t care about Flash, I’ve been little frustrated to not be able to play my blog videos.
* Some javascript will need to be modified all over the web to match touch screen UI (like voting stars).
* As empty of software as the iPad was, when I first ran the iPod app, it took 2 seconds to launch. A bit strange…
* Waiting for testing a bit more the device :)

Flight Control and Doodle Jump, same story

iPhone games No Comments »

Two of the most popular iPhone games, trusting the App Store top 10 regularly. In Flight Control you have to draw plane directions in order to land the planes. In Doodle Jump you have to tilt the iPhone in order to jump on clouds. Both of these games have the same objective, reach the highest score. They can be very addictive when you compete with your friends. They are nicely done, and very accurate in their controls. However in front of “no chance to beat” high scores, I felt discourage to play them, not seeing really any joy to try. It would have been better to make you compete only with people next to you, and only show national and international high score once you can compete with them.

Fun : ★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

I spent about 5 hours on Flight Control trying to beat three of my friends,  then everybody gave up when we saw that our leader spent a week to reach his best score (you can pause the game). I play it time to time now, to see how far I still am from my friend best score. I’ve played Doodle Jump 20 minutes since I bought it three weeks ago. At the right moment, I would pay $1 for Flight Control and nothing for Doodle Jump.

I downloaded this game for free and paid for the second level inside the game. There is three other levels than you can buy. You can also buy the game in once. Your objective is to bring few little Rolando circles to a door. The Rolandos can jump and activate different mechanisms. To make them move you tilt the iPhone. That’s the main reason I didn’t like the game that much. Tilting is ok for racing game but here I felt a bit disturbed by tilting the iPhone too much. Overall the game pace was too slow for me. However some of the vocal musics are good, and visuals are ok. It’s been a big improvement compare to Rolando 1 that I didn’t appreciate, but it’s still not my favorite ice-cream.

Fun : ★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

I spent maximum 2 hours to finish the two first levels and I will probably never play it again. At this right moment, I would not buy it.

Steam likes your ports, many of them

Apple No Comments »

I was really happy that Steam released a Mac version of their gaming portal. I was also very surprised that it came with that many games, including Portal for free. But what a shock to discover that Steam does not run on any network administrated by a professional.

If you want to try to run Steam on a university network or on a company network, you will make laugh your system administrator. Steam requires not less that 40 ports to be opened. Obviously your system administrator will refuse to open that many ports.

Source: my sys admin and the very good Steam support (it’s not sarcastic, they do answer quickly)

26th May 2010 Update

Since this morning, Steam got updated, and I can now access to the service. What a fantastic game service for Mac! Just waiting for real blockbuster to come on the platform… and buy a new Macbook Pro :)

When you buy this game, it comes with three levels and you can buy two others for AU$1 each. First I have to say I don’t like when a game comes incomplete.
Otherwise this is a basic tower defense game. So you have to place tower on the field to destroy enemies. If an enemy reach the other side of the field you lose one of your 20 life points. It’s not ugly, speedy enough, and you win at the 100th wave. For sure, you’ll have fun with it.

Fun : ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

I spent at least 6 hours on it. I didn’t play the medium and hard level, it’s probably very difficult. I like to try them once every three month. I kept the game on my iPhone. At this right moment, I would not pay more than 4 bucks for it.

Time : ★★★★★★½☆☆☆

That’s the PSP trailer but on iPhone it looks exactly like this video.

How to quickly edit a file with a Netbeans macro

PHP No Comments »

I just discovered Netbeans macro functionality. I had a huge file to edit. On every lines, I had to add a string on the 20th position. Instead of creating a little program (it would have take me 15 minutes or more), in Netbeans I selected Menu > Edit > Start Macro Recording:
1- I clicked with the mouse on the position where I wanted to add my string.
2- I added my string.
3- With the keyboard, I moved my cursor on the next position in order to enter the next string.
4- I selected Menu > Edit > Stop Macro Recording and assigned the macro to a shortcut key.
5- I pressed the shortcut key as long as my steps needed to be executed. 6 seconds later my huge file was totaly edited.

You can do a lot more stuff with Netbeans macro, fantastic IDE. A shame that it doesn’t have git and it is sometimes annoying with CVS patches, it would be the perfect IDE. Oh but Nebeans 6.9 should have Git ! What to ask more ?

Plants versus zombies

Waves of zombies arrive in straight lines. If they reach your house, game over. To stop them, you plant plants :) They can be attacking plants, defensive plants or money plants. There is a lot of different plants and different zombies. The game is nicely animated, the music is pleasant and I had lots of fun to stop the zombies. There is a bit of humour, and overall the game is quite easy. I’ve been losing two times maximum before finishing the game. Losing is frustating in this game, so I appreciate that the level is not too difficult. A perfect popcorn game, you play, have fun and pass to something else.

Fun : ★★★★★★★½☆☆

I spent easily 5 hours on it. I’m not sure I will ever replay this game, since I uninstalled it. At this right moment, I would pay 6 dollars for it.
